We, the undersigned Civil Society Organisations, are appalled are appalled by the news of another death at the MACC (Malaysia anti Corruption Commission) Office that reportedly occurred yesterday around 10.15am. The victim, believed to be Ahmad Sarbani Mohamed (56) an assistant director of the Selangor Customs Department had been released on bail three days ago, but was found dead on the first floor of MACC building at Jalan Cochrane.
To the best of our knowledge, this is the second time a fellow citizen has died whilst under the custody of the MACC. The fact that this comes not long after the death of Teoh Beng Hock in July 2009, is a real cause for concern for the peoples of this nation. This incident has again raised questions on the integrity and accountability of the MACC. Public confidence in the credibility and professionalism of the MACC has been shattered!
We are extremely saddened that the very institutions of the State that are supposed to protect and advance the public's interest have apparently abandoned the principles of democratic governance. Not only have human freedom and dignity been degraded, lives have been unnecessarily lost.
WE, the undersigned civil society groups (CSGs), call upon the Election Commission (EC) to allow Sarawakians in overseas West Malaysia, Sabah, and even in different regions within Sarawak to vote by postal ballots in the coming Sarawak elections.
This is legally possible by the EC’s own admission and only requires a longer campaign period, which should be a minimum of 21 days considering the geographical spread of Sarawak constituencies.
Postal voting would enable some 50,000-200,000 Sarawakians – according to different estimates - to vote without taking leave and spending hundreds of ringgit to return home. Sabah faces the same problem too.
The proposed Social Inclusion Act (SIA) is an initiative by SABM and HAKAM to address increasing poverty and marginalisation plaguing Malaysia. At its core, the SIA seeks to redirect social welfare decisions and programmes away from the centre and place it much closer to the hands of the people who need it the most.
PSM was among the four political parties (PRM, SAPP, STAR Sabah) which readily endorsed the proposed SIA and have included the agenda in their GE13 manifesto. We asked S Arutchelvan, PSM Secretary-General to share his views.
“Social inclusion” is a process which ensures that those at risk of poverty and social exclusion gain the opportunities and resources necessary to participate fully in economic, social and cultural life and to enjoy a standard of living and well-being that is considered normal in the society in which they live. It ensures that they have a greater participation in decision making which affects their lives and access to their fundamental rights.
