Malay Youth Democratic Renewal Post-GE 15: The Politics of Acknowledgement and Resentment

The genesis of “Orang Kita: Politics of Acknowledgement and Resentment” began as an inquiry into understanding why Malay youths overwhelmingly supported the Perikatan Nasional coalition during the Malaysian 15th General Elections (GE15) in 2022. It wasn’t enough to investigate their political decision-making, but it was also essential to understand the broader context, informing how they understood politics, democracy, identity, and their larger place within Malaysia. This study engaged with Malay youths aged 18 to 35 across Peninsular Malaysia, particularly the ‘Malay Heartlands’, through in-depth interviews involving 105 participants from various backgrounds.
